10 Top Reasons To Elope To Scotland!
Updated: Jan 15, 2019
Elopements are truly special - full of romance and adventure. I can't think of a better place than Scotland to elope to! Below are just 10 of the reasons why you should elope to Scotland.
1. You can get legally married anywhere in Scotland!
Just one of the things that sets Scotland a part from anywhere else in the world. Your options are endless! Imagine being on top on mountain, the amazing scenery and its just the two you (plus a celebrant and a photographer) in the wilderness vowing to love and protect each other forever?
Or perhaps you've always wanted to get married in an enchanting forest? On a beach? Or in a middle of a field with cows surrounding you? However you want your special day to be, you will more than likely be able to do it!
2. You can get married at anytime
Leading on from point one - not just anywhere but anytime! Imagine getting married underneath the night sky or getting married just as the sun comes up? Oh, the romance!
3. Scotland is rich in culture, history and traditions
We are so lucky here in Scotland that you don't have to go far at all to see amazing historical sites, hear about the clans or get to swept up in the history of the area. Some of my favourite wedding traditions are the sixpence in the Bride's shoe and a sprig of heather in the bouquet to bring good fortune. Then there is the Luckenbooth, a broach given to the Bride from the Groom as a token of his love. Bagpipes are also a favourite - so hauntingly beautiful.
There is so much that I can talk about this topic so I will do a blog post solely on this.
4. The landscapes and scenery is like nothing else.
It's hard to put into words just how beautiful the scenery is. Whether you venture near the coastlines or are inland amongst the highlands. It is nothing short of spectacular. I will just leave these images with you!
5. There is so much to do - so much adventure to be had!
After you have eloped and you are enjoying your time together as newlyweds, why not make an adventure/holiday to remember! There is something for everyone and so much sightseeing to do. From highland safaris to exploring castle ruins, hiking in the wilderness to exploring cities, visiting quaint coastline villages to searching for fairies (yes, really! Fairy pools on the Isle of Skye are a must see). If you time it right, you may also get to witness some spectacular festivals too.
6. The amazing venues you can get married in
Since you can get married anywhere here in Scotland the venues are of course endless. Each venue is unique and lets you see a different part of this wonderful country. Think Mountain Bothy (small hut), a Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Gypsy Caravans to Tipis and Treehouses - just name a few!
7. The food and drink
One thing Scotland is known for is its food and drink. Yes there is Haggis (which is definitely a must try) but there is so much more. The fish is one of the best, especially Salmon and you will definitely have to try Scottish fish and chips (called Fish Supper here)! There are plenty of exquisite restaurants that serve only the best and then of course you have the shortbread and deep fat fried Mars Bar! Then wash it down with a dram of Whisky. Scotland is known for its Whisky and there are many distilleries all around the country that you can tour and sample a taste - about 126 to be exact (in 2017). And Gin, Scottish Gin makes up about 70% of UK's Gin production ...so we definitely like our Gin! But not everything is alcoholic - Irn Bru soft drink is a must try!
8. The atmosphere
Scotland's atmosphere is truly special. With a wealth of history, rugged landscapes and stylish cities you can't go wrong (I know I keep mentioning it!). In the heart of the cities its fast paced and vibrant but drive 15/20 minutes in either direction out of a city and you're in the peaceful country side. Then there are the locals - some of the friendliest people you will meet. They are proudly Scottish (as they should be!) keeping traditions alive and that is what makes being here so very special.
9. You can get away from it all
Yep - I'll mention it again - the peaceful landscapes! If you want to 'get away from it all', Scotland is the place to do it. There are so many lovely Air BnB's, cabins, Bothy's and cottages that are hidden away so you can just relax and unwind to be with the one you love and be at peace with nature.
10. The weather!
When you think of Scotland, rain usually comes to mind. And you'd be right, most of the time! But rain isn't a bad thing - you need to embrace it. As long as you are prepared for it, it doesn't have to stop you from doing anything, unless its torrential then it makes for the best cosy days! If we didn't have so much, it wouldn't be as green and lush as it is. Don't get me wrong, we do get sunny days, and boy, when we do its just amazing! The misty 'gloomy' days (not gloomy in my eyes) make for such powerful and beautiful photography - so no matter the weather you will always get spectacular photos. You also don't get many places that can give you four seasons in a day - now that's pretty special!
So there you go! My top 10 reasons to elope to this beautiful country. If you want to find out more or ask me any questions, don't hesitate!
